In Halle, our teams are working across four intensive TLO weekends to renew no fewer than eight railway switches. During these weekends, work continues around the clock, 24/7, to minimize the impact on rail traffic as much as possible.

Renewing a railway switch is a technically demanding operation in which several phases follow one another at a rapid pace:

• Removing the old switches and excavating the worn ballast
• Bringing in, levelling and compacting new ballast to create a stable foundation
• Installing and connecting the new switches to the existing railway infrastructure
• Finally, the tracks are tamped using a tamping machine to ensure everything is perfectly aligned to the required level

The video shows how the new switches are transported from the storage area to the worksite using lorries. Once on site, gantries lift the switches off the lorries before manoeuvring the structure sideways into its final position, precisely onto the renewed ballast bed.
